The Southern Reach trilogy
by Jeff Vandermeer
I don’t know that I’ve ever read a series that does such an impressive job of creating an eerie, Weird, otherworldly atmosphere infused with creeping dread. That’s not to say that these books are scary, though, so don’t let that put you off.
A team of five women enter a territory known as Area X, where the land and creatures has been… changed. Their mission is to discover why, after numerous teams before them have failed to do so. The second book switches up the feeling and setting quite a bit while still managing to convey a sense of serious wrongness. I adore this creepy, weird series!
This is the movie adaptation of the first book in the Southern Reach trilogy. The plot ends up quite a bit different from the book but the atmosphere of Weird eeriness is lovingly recreated in this film! I hugely recommend this to sci-fi fans who don’t mind unanswered mysteries. Already enjoy the movie? Pick up the book series!!!
The Masquerade trilogy
by Seth Dickinson
My poor booktalk skills can’t do this book justice, so I’m going to simply write a list of qualities that may entice you to pick this up:
- Smart and gut-wrenching plotlines
- Complex characters with layered motivations à la Game of Thrones
- Light fantasy elements
- Political machinations
- Badass women characters
- A protagonist that begins a journey toward being an anti-hero
- Explores themes of colonialism and imperialism
- Saturated with thoughts of REVENGE!!!!
- I have not yet read the third and final book but I can’t imagine a universe in which I’ll be unhappy with it. Prepare for emotional obliteration, though, because some truly sad stuff happens. (which is an understatement).
