NASA recently landed their Perseverance Rover on mars. They named the site where the rover touched down “Octavia E. Butler Landing” after the esteemed science fiction author. As it turns out, Butler is not alone on mars, many sites on the red planet have been named for famous writers! Octavia E. Butler was the first African American woman to win the Hugo and Nebula awards and the first sci-fi writer to be honored with a MacArthur Fellowship. She is known for such works as the Xenogenesis trilogy and the Parable and Patternist series. As well as her famous historical fiction book “Kindred”.

Edgar Rice Burroughs was an American speculative fiction writer, best known for his prolific output in adventure, science fiction and fantasy genres. His most well-known creations include Tarzan of the Apes, John Carter of Mars (Barsoom series) and Carson Napier of Venus (Amtor series).

Ray Bradbury was one of the most celebrated 20th-century American writers. He worked in a variety of genes, but was mainly known for his novel Fahrenheit 451 and his short-story collections including The Martian Chronicles. Carl Sagan was an American astronomer, planetary scientist, cosmologist, astrophysicist, astrobiologist, author, and science communicator. Sagan assembled the first physical messages sent into space: the Pioneer plaque and the Voyager Golden Record, a messages that could potentially be understood by alien life. He was also author, co-author or editor of more than 20 books.
