Kathy Brown is an Assistant at the Carnegie Museum of Montgomery County.

The Carnegie Museum of Montgomery County is offering a number of “COVID-conscious” Christmas opportunities as we celebrate the holidays this year, including festive displays for your holiday photos, activities and crafts for the kids, book drawings, take-home kits, and a visit from Santa himself! All events are free and open to the public, with face masks required in the building for ages 3 and up. We also offer a great way to shop locally for the holidays, with a number of fun and unique ideas for those on your list.

On Saturday, December 4th from 2:30 to 4:30 pm, Santa Claus will visit the Carnegie! Santa will be seated outside, weather permitting (masks optional), or inside with our holiday décor (masks required). Families should bring their own camera to take their own photos.  And from now until December 23rd, you can also use our festive holiday décor as a background for your family photos. Options include our historic sleigh and decorated trees, a snowy winter scene, a fun snowman, and more. There is a selfie station with festive props, too! Bring your own camera – or your favorite photographer – to capture the perfect moment. Guests can remove their face masks for their photos, but we do ask that you socially distance yourself from other families while you do so.

To make things even more festive, we’ll also be holding weekly drawings for book sets.  Winter and holiday-themed crafts and activities will be available for the kids with special bonus crafts offered on Saturdays in December. Kids can write a letter to Santa, create paper snowflakes, decorate a felt tree, and more! Come in on December 4th to make a holiday ornament, December 11th to make a reindeer, and December 18th to make holiday slime. Saturday crafts and winter take-home kits will be available while supplies last, and families can follow us on Facebook or give us a call for more information (765-362-4618).

While you’re here, don’t forget to visit our gift shop. We offer all sorts of unique gifts and stocking stuffers with a Montgomery County twist. We have numerous books by local authors, books about our area’s history, playing cards, jigsaw puzzles, creative gifts for kids, plus Carnegie Museum-branded items. We even have Carnegie Museum holiday ornaments. Shop locally right here in downtown Crawfordsville.

Gift memberships also make a great holiday present. Members of the Carnegie Museum gain access to the Association of Science & Technology Centers (ASTC) Passport Program, which provides free admission to over 300 museums around the world. Participating museums include the very popular Field Museum of Natural History and the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago, as well as others in Cincinnati, St. Louis, Louisville, and more. We can send the membership card to you to give to your friend or family member, or mail the membership directly to the recipient with your compliments.

There’s so much to do at the Carnegie this holiday season!
